BOOM! Here Comes the Thunder!

I miss the 80s and the 90s era of toy collecting… I really do. Back in that joyous golden era, there was only a little bit of the production mentality of cost savings at the expense of the toy’s quality. Back then we had big playsets like the Rolling Thunder. Back then we had big playsets like the Terrordrome. Back then we had big playsets like the Thunderclap.

While most of the GI Joe and Cobra vehicles were built for close or head to head combat in the field, the Thunderclap was clearly meant to dish out massive damage from long range. The playset is split into three compartments, but the main damage is dealt by the middle platform. The huge cannon is able to elevate to different levels thereby increasing the range at which its targets can be hit. Extra stability is added to the firing base as the entire platform can be supported by four long metal legs (ala the Siege Mode of Siege Tanks in Starcraft – I know, I’m old LOL). While firing, the platform is defended by manned gun ports in the front and back cabs.

The two other parts of the Thunderclap are armored vehicles designed to carry the cannon platform around. Both are equipped with cannons and missiles for added protection in case of an assault. The driver/operator of the vintage vehicle is a Joe trooper aptly named Long Range. He has bright armor which makes him look like he stepped out of a medieval castle (all he needs is a sword and shield). His helmet is equipped with a scanning visor presumably for long range tracking. With the amazing detail done on the playset, it’s a shame the driver wasn’t given much color or accessories to work with.

All in all, the vintage Thunderclap holds up well despite being about 30 years old in age. It is compatible with both vintage and modern 3.75inch figures. It is rare to see toy companies produce playsets of this size nowadays, which make the Thunderclap definitely stand out in any GI Joe collection.

TOY ASYLUM’S RATING (OUT OF 5 STARS)

OVERALL DESIGN - 4 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The huge elevated cannon provides a sense of realism dating back to the huge gun batteries used during the Second World War

PLAYABILITY - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- This playset is mainly for display/diorama purposes – there’s only so much you can do with a giant cannon and two mini tanks.

DURABILITY - 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The structure of the Thunderclap playset allows for a sturdier vehicle – from the stable armored vehicles to the strong main cannon.

RARITY - 3.0 OUT OF 5 STARS

- Though not as rare as some of the vintage vehicle out there, it may be a challenge to get a hold of one at the right price and in great condition.

*Not all of the pics are mine so a BIG thanks to the owners (and congratulations for a wonderful collection!).
