Deviant Online!

Combat mechs in the GI Joe lore are a tricky thing. Whereas some of the other vehicles in that universe are realistic (I said some LOL), the mech borders closely on the science fiction side. The Cobra Deviant Mech is a perfect example of this. At first glance, the towering robot is imposing in stature, with its menacing red frame and insect-like feet. The crimson red glass panel in the canopy really adds to the overall image (perfect for a Cobra vehicle).

Where the Joe’s Steel Marauder Mech is used as a long range attack vehicle, Cobra’s Deviant Mech is built mainly for close range battle. The left arm has a huge mace-like weapon that can be used to bludgeon opposing vehicles (with a spring-loaded function that can surprisingly be played with by adults LOL). The right arm complements this by housing a grappling hook which can be launched at opponents (no doubt to reel them in for more punishment).

The overall detail in the mech is amazing, from the small missile launchers at the top to the tubes at the legs. The cockpit is also done really well, as the pilot can fit snuggly while also being able to hold the controls with both hands. The Cyber Viper (the pilot) figure is actually pretty good. The red and black colors complement each other and what we have is a futuristic operator of some very advanced machinery. I wish he would have come with a handgun but at least he is packaged with a knife.

While it’s no secret that the Steel Marauder is the one that’s heavily sought by collectors, I can honestly get behind the Cobra Deviant Mech as well. The structure as well as design of the vehicle is actually well done, and the close combat feel gives it a more menacing vibe – definitely worthy of the Cobra armory.

TOY ASYLUM’S RATING (OUT OF 5 STARS)

OVERALL DESIGN - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- Although I was not a fan of the color scheme when I saw the initial pictures, having the item in my hands changed my perspective. The design screams COBRAAAAAA!!!

PLAYABILITY - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The Cobra Deviant Mech is fun to tinker with, especially beside the other vehicles/figures in your collection.

DURABILITY - 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The vehicle looks to be very sturdy, with only the canopy joysticks and the figure’s knife most likely to be lost when being played with.

RARITY - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- Though not as rare as the Joe Steel Marauder, finding one at a good price is a bit more challenging.

*Not all of the pics are mine so a BIG thanks to the owners (and congratulations for a wonderful collection!).
