GI Joe Spytroops Cobra Ringneck: A Forgotten Gem

The Cobra Ringneck in action.

While the Spytroops and Valor Vs Venom era may sometimes be overlooked by casual fans, there can be no denying that this period of GI Joe history produced some very interesting and creative vehicles. A perfect example is the Cobra Ringneck. Functioning as a high speed armored attack vehicle, this 6 wheel drive mini tank is able to easily travel to areas which the bigger HISS tanks may have a harder time reaching.

The Ringneck’s main cannon is strategically mounted in the middle for maximum firepower and range. The vehicle is sporting 3 other guns for additional offense and defense – 1 in front and 1 on each side. This allows the vehicle to carry four figures (as opposed to the HISS’ single driver). There is also a creatively hidden feature which, when pushed, allows the main gun’s canopy to swivel from left to right. The two pods on the side armed with guns are able to detach and stand on their own – forming sentry-like weapon placements which are essential in fortifying defensive positions.

The vehicle is compatible with both vintage and modern figures, and I can see this being used for urban-type Cobra missions (imagine this leading a city strike assault while being flanked by ruthless Alley Vipers!). The Cobra Ringneck comes with a Neo Viper figure who basically functions as the vehicle’s driver – this is a solid basic trooper although it would have been nice if the helmet could come off.

While not as popular as some of the iconic vehicles such as the HISS and the Stun, the Cobra Ringneck is still a very interesting part of the franchise history. The color scheme and battle features definitely make it a valued addition to any Cobra collection (I should know because I have three!).

TOY ASYLUM’S RATING (OUT OF 5 STARS)

OVERALL DESIGN - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The vehicle design and color absolutely screams Cobra. While a few more details could have enhanced design, it doesn’t in any way lessen the value.

PLAYABILITY - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS

- The standard assault vehicle gives you a good play value – the detachable gun sentries and swiveling main cannon should go over with the kids.

DURABILITY - 4.0 OUT OF 5 STARS

- This is a solid GI Joe vehicle despite coming from the vintage era. As with any vehicle/playset, usually the first thing to go missing is the small antenna.

RARITY - 4.0 OUT OF 5 STARS

- It’s a bit hard to find Cobra Ringneck these days – especially one that’s complete and in great condition. If you manage to find one at a good price, don’t let it go.

*Not all of the pics are mine so a BIG thanks to the owners (and congratulations for a wonderful collection!).
