Springer is a fan-favorite character whose stature is well known in almost all TF media – be it the original UK comics, the cartoons, and even the IDW universe. He’s always been a triple-changer in every continuity, so it’s only natural that we would expect this same feature in our very own toy figures. The Generations (or Thrilling 30) version of Springer which was released in 2013 is based on the popular IDW universe – where he is known as the loose but firm leader of the Wreckers faction.
As the head of the Wreckers, he towers a bit over the other Autobots (perfect for his toy scale as a Voyager). His broad shoulders, massive twin cannons, and long sword add to the imposing image of the iconic character. Placing him beside figures of his fellow Wreckers like Twin Twist and Roadbuster make for impressive group photos.
While some people may find the colors to be a bit bright, personally this doesn’t bother me that much. As a fan of the IDW Universe, it honestly looks like he just jumped out of a Nick Roche comic book! While his two other modes are not bad, the best one by far is his robot form. His car mode sort of resembles a two seater Camaro (big green Bumblebee anyone?) while his helicopter form looks like a cool cross between an Apache and a Sikorsky.
Fast forward to 2020 and we have a new Springer figure coming from the Siege line. While that figure sure is beautiful and is perfect for the original cartoon/movie fans, the IDW Springer still holds a place in our hearts – especially if you’re an avid follower of the current comic run.
TOY ASYLUM’S RATING (OUT OF 5 STARS)
OVERALL DESIGN - 4 OUT OF 5 STARS
- The toy design is impressive as a homage to the IDW Universe’s version of the character (wish we could have gotten an alternate head with half a face LOL).
PLAYABILITY - 4 OUT OF 5 STARS
- The robot mode is nice to look at when displayed on the shelves, but some clear minor weaknesses are seen in the other modes (specially the helicopter form).
DURABILITY - 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS
- The figure is firm and looks able to withstand the test of time - probably the first thing most kids will lose are the firing rockets (lets be serious, the twin cannons look better without them).
RARITY - 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS
- Although a bit easy to find especially on the secondary market, the challenge is getting one at a good price.
*Not all of the pics are mine so a BIG thanks to the owners (and congratulations for a wonderful collection!).
